BCS Members at London 2012

This Olympic year, British Colleges Sport will be represented in large numbers frommanyOlympic Stadium of our member colleges all over the country. Current and           ex-students will be taking part in the Olympics in a variety of ways from carrying the Olympic Torch around their local area to volunteering and in some cases competing in some of the sports which are taking place.

There are over 300 students volunteering at the Olympics from BCS member colleges who are volunteering not just in London but across the country in a range of different events such as Sailing in Weymouth and at the St James' Park in Newcastle where some of the football games are being played.

Along with the volunteers there are over 15 current and ex-students from members colleges who have been given the honour to parade the Olympic torch around their local Tajarea. One of these privileged people was Taj Sahota (left) previously from Loughborough College who was the vice chair of the BCS Student Council and was picked to run with the torch in her home town. Taj was one of 7,300 nominated people who has carried the flame around the country with its final stop being at The Olympics Stadium, London this evening (Friday 27th July). Taj started volunteering when she was in year 8 at school and has progressed through school and college continuing with her volunteering work, accumulating over 4,000 hours and counting. Other torch bears include Maggie Glastonbury and Leon Reid both from South Gloucestershire & Stroud College and Charlotte Broadhead who is an ex-student of Petroc.

There are at least 10 current or ex-students from BCS member colleges who are competing in the Paralympic Games. One of these students is Dan James, an ex-student from Exeter College in the South West who will be going to the Paralympic Games as a goalkeeper for Team GB in the blind football team.

There will be at least 30 competitors who have come through BCS colleges over the years or are still at college, who will be at the Olympic Games and competing over the next few weeks. There are some famous names such as Rebecca Adlington who went to West Notts College and Liam Tancock who went to Exeter College who will both beIssac Dogboe representing Team GB this summer in the pool. Some names that aren’t as high profiled that are taking part include Charlotte Kerwood who went to Sussex Downs College who will be competing in the Trap in Shooting and Barbara Parker who is competing 3000m steeplechase and 5000m. One student who is currently at the London 2012 Olympics from St Francis Xavier 6th Form College is Issac Dogboe (right) who is just 17 and will be representing Ghana in the Men's Bantam Boxing (56kg).

John Hole, Chief Executive of BCS said: " The 2012 Olympic Games in London is going to be a great spectacle with these students who are representing their nation in the games as well as the volunteers and torch bearers. It is a fantastic opportunity for them to be able to display to the world their talents that have got them to this stage."
